Organising Summer Sports and Hobby Gear
If your summer plans involve anything from paddleboarding to painting, now’s the perfect time to get your gear in order. The last thing you want is to finally feel motivated to move — only to waste 20 minutes searching for your yoga mat, bike pump, or missing racket.
Sports equipment and hobby items tend to pile up, especially when we’re “planning” to use them. So let’s get practical and organised, and make space for the things that energise and excite you this summer.
Start with a Gear Inventory
Whether your hobby is golf, tennis, beach days or crafting, start by gathering all your related items into one space.
Ask:
• Do I use this regularly?
• Is it still in working condition?
• Do I even enjoy this activity anymore?
Let go of the fantasy gear — the stuff you bought with good intentions but never used. It’s taking up physical and mental space.
Group by Activity
Once you’ve trimmed things down, group your gear by category:
• Water gear: goggles, towels, snorkels, waterproof bags
• Fitness: yoga mats, resistance bands, trainers
• Outdoor: bikes, helmets, beach chairs, footballs
• Creative: paints, sketchpads, camera equipment
Store each category in a basket, box, or bag so it’s easy to grab and go.
Label everything clearly — especially if you’ve got kids or a partner who’s always asking where things are.
Check for Maintenance and Safety
Before you head out on a hike or pump up the paddleboard, make sure everything is safe and functional. That includes:
• Inflating balls or tyres
• Replacing worn grips or broken straps
• Washing towels or kit bags
• Replacing batteries in torches or headlamps
Doing it now avoids frustration later — and keeps everyone safer and happier.
Create a Summer Grab-and-Go Station
If you’ve got the space, set up a small area (near the door, in a cupboard, or even the boot of the car) with your most-used summer gear.
Include:
• Sunblock
• Hats and sunglasses
• Water bottles
• A light bag with towels or picnic supplies
• Sports shoes or flip flops
It makes spontaneous trips and activities easier and means you’re less likely to forget the essentials.
Donate or Pass On Unused Gear
If something hasn’t been used in over a year and isn’t linked to a current hobby or goal, it’s time to let it go. Pass it on to a friend, donate to a local community group, or sell it online.
Someone else could be thrilled to give it a new life this summer.

Decluttering your gear means you’re more likely to actually use it — and less likely to be put off by the effort of getting started. Whether you’re looking to move more, get outside, or just enjoy your hobbies again, a little organisation now will go a long way when the temperatures rise.
