The Room-by-Room Guide to Decluttering Before Moving Day
Moving house is the perfect opportunity to take a fresh look at everything you own. Instead of packing room after room without a plan, take the time to declutter before moving day. It will make packing easier, reduce the number of boxes and help you settle into your new home with less effort.
The key is to work through your home one room at a time. Focusing on one space before moving on to the next keeps the process manageable and helps you see progress as you go.
The Bedroom
Wardrobes often contain clothes that haven't been worn for years.
As you go through your clothing, ask yourself whether each item still fits, suits your lifestyle and gets regular wear. The same applies to shoes, handbags and accessories.
Don't forget bedside tables and under-bed storage, where forgotten items often accumulate.
The Bathroom
Bathrooms are usually one of the quickest rooms to declutter.
Dispose of expired toiletries and medicines safely, recycle empty bottles where possible and get rid of products you know you'll never use. There's little point moving half-used items that have been sitting in the cupboard for months.
Keep only the toiletries you'll need during the final few days before your move.
The Kitchen
The kitchen often takes longer than expected because it contains so many small items.
Check expiry dates in your pantry and use up food where you can before moving. Sort through utensils, cookware and gadgets, removing duplicates and anything that no longer works.
If you haven't used a gadget in years, it's worth considering whether it deserves space in your new kitchen.
The Living Room
Bookshelves, display cabinets and storage units can hold far more than we realise.
Go through books, decorative items, magazines and electronics with a critical eye. Keep the pieces that you enjoy and use, and consider donating anything that's simply taking up space.
Remember to organise cables, chargers and remote controls so they're easy to identify when unpacking.
The Home Office
Whether you work from home every day or occasionally, your office deserves attention before moving.
Shred paperwork you no longer need, organise important documents into clearly labelled folders and recycle outdated manuals or stationery.
Taking the time to organise your workspace now makes setting it up again much quicker.
Storage Areas and Garage
These spaces often become home to everything that doesn't have an obvious place elsewhere.
Work through boxes one at a time and avoid the temptation to keep items "just in case". Seasonal decorations, sports equipment, tools and old paint tins should all be reviewed carefully before moving.
These areas can take longer than expected, so allow yourself plenty of time.
Finish Strong
Once you've worked through every room, you'll have a much clearer picture of what you're taking with you.
Decluttering before moving day isn't about owning less for the sake of it. It's about ensuring every item has a purpose in your new home. By tackling one room at a time, you'll make packing more efficient, reduce unnecessary moving costs and enjoy unpacking into a home that already feels organised from the moment you arrive.
