Refreshing Your Home Office for Summer

Working from home in the summer can be a mixed bag — on the one hand, it’s a bit quieter, a bit slower. On the other, you might find yourself battling heat, distractions, and a workspace that feels a bit… stale.

That’s why I always recommend giving your home office a quick refresh before summer really kicks in. It doesn’t need to be a full renovation — just a simple reset to help you stay focused and comfortable.

Clear Your Desk (But Don’t Empty It All Out)

You don’t have to take everything off the desk to start. That just creates unnecessary chaos. Instead, work section by section.

  • Toss out dried pens, old post-it notes, and random receipts.

  • File away paperwork or better yet, scan and go digital.

  • Wipe down surfaces, especially your keyboard and mouse — they get grubby.

Think of it like giving your workspace a little breather.

Minimise Paper and Cables

Summer is a great time to go digital wherever possible:

  • Switch to online notes instead of pads all over the place.

  • Digitise paperwork with scanning apps.

  • Use cable organisers or ties to tame that tangle under the desk.

If you’ve got gadgets or tech you don’t use regularly, box them up and put them away for now.

Update Your Summer Supplies

Think about what you need to stay comfortable and productive during hotter days. Here’s what I like to keep nearby in summer:

  • A small fan or desk fan

  • Cooling facial mist or water spray

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Light snacks or herbal teas

  • A plant or two for a touch of greenery

Swap out heavy, warm items like throws or rugs for lighter versions. Keep the space airy and cool if you can.

Reassess Your Layou

Sometimes a quick rearrange can boost your energy. Try facing your desk towards natural light — but avoid sitting in direct sun if you’re prone to overheating.

If you’ve got space, create a little summer “thinking corner” with a chair and side table. It’s a nice alternative to sitting at the desk all day and can help with creative thinking.

Keep It Seasonal and Simple

Don’t overcomplicate it. A small vase of flowers, a citrus-scented candle, or a fresh desktop wallpaper can give your space a lift. You want the room to feel lighter — not just in clutter, but in mood.

Your home office doesn’t need a complete makeover, just a tidy-up and a few smart swaps to help you enjoy the season while staying on top of your work.
