How to Organise Your Home Before the Movers Arrive
When moving day finally arrives, the last thing you want is to be searching for your passport, trying to empty the fridge or wondering which box contains the kettle.
A little preparation before the movers arrive can make the entire process smoother. Instead of feeling rushed, you'll be ready to welcome the moving team and focus on getting into your new home.
Here's a simple timeline to help you stay organised.
One Week Before Moving Day
This is the ideal time to finish decluttering. Go through each room and remove anything you no longer need. There's little point paying to move items that won't have a place in your new home.
As you pack, label every box clearly with both its contents and the room it belongs in. It may take a little longer now, but it will save hours when you're unpacking.
If possible, keep boxes from each room together so they're easier for the movers to identify.
Three Days Before
Start packing the items you use less frequently.
Seasonal clothing, books, decorative accessories and spare bedding can all be boxed up well before moving day. Leave only your everyday essentials unpacked.
This is also a good time to separate valuables and important documents. Keep passports, identification, jewellery, financial paperwork and house documents with you rather than placing them in the moving van.
The Day Before
Your home should now be mostly packed.
Empty and defrost the freezer if necessary, finish using perishable food and disconnect any appliances that need preparing for transport.
Pack an essentials box containing everything you'll need for the first day in your new home. Include chargers, medication, toiletries, tea or coffee, snacks, a change of clothes, basic cleaning supplies and anything else you'll want immediately without opening multiple boxes.
Finally, do one last walk through each room to check cupboards, shelves and storage spaces haven't been overlooked.
On Moving Morning
Wake up with enough time to avoid rushing.
Make sure pathways are clear so movers can safely carry furniture and boxes through the property. Keep pets and young children away from busy areas where possible, helping everyone stay safe throughout the move.
Have your phone fully charged and keep important contact numbers close by, including your movers, estate agent or letting agent if required.
Before the movers leave, do one final check of every room, cupboard, wardrobe, loft, garage and outdoor storage area. It's surprisingly easy to leave something behind.
The Pay-Off
Preparing your home before the movers arrive isn't about making everything perfect. It's about making moving day as efficient as possible.
When everything is labelled, organised and ready to go, the movers can work more efficiently, your belongings are easier to unpack and you can settle into your new home with far less stress.
The more organised your home is before moving day, the easier it becomes to enjoy the excitement of what's waiting on the other side of the front door.
