How to Organise Blankets, Bedding and Seasonal Home Essentials
There is usually one cupboard.
The one containing spare sheets, towels that don't quite belong anywhere else, extra pillows, blankets, guest bedding and perhaps a duvet squeezed onto the top shelf. Somewhere at the back is something you vaguely remember buying, but reaching it would require removing everything in front first.
For much of the year, this cupboard is easy to ignore.
Then the weather changes, guests are coming to stay or you suddenly want an extra blanket in the evening.
Could you find what you need without turning the cupboard upside down?
That is the standard a well-organised seasonal cupboard needs to meet.
Keep What Matches Your Home Now
Bedding can accumulate surprisingly easily.
You replace a duvet cover but keep the old one as a spare. You change bed sizes but hold onto the sheets. Children grow up, rooms change purpose and guest arrangements evolve, yet the linen cupboard continues storing items for a version of the home that no longer exists.
Bring similar items together and look at what you actually have.
Do the fitted sheets still fit beds currently in your home? How many spare sets do you realistically need? Are you keeping bedding that is worn, uncomfortable or never chosen?
The same applies to blankets and throws. Keep the ones that are useful and that you enjoy having around your home rather than retaining every one you have accumulated.
Store Sets as Sets
Few things are more frustrating than finding the duvet cover but not the matching pillowcases.
Keep bedding sets together so everything you need is in one place. One simple option is to fold the set and place the smaller pieces inside one of its pillowcases.
It keeps the set contained and makes it easy to identify without searching through several piles.
You can also group bedding by room or bed size. Choose whichever system makes it immediately obvious what belongs where.
If you need labels to distinguish between similar sizes, use them. You should not have to unfold three fitted sheets to work out which bed they fit.
Give Seasonal Items a Sensible Place
In the UK, cooler months can mean heavier duvets, additional blankets and warmer bedding returning to regular use.
The UAE transition is different. Air conditioning means blankets and duvets may be used throughout the year, while cooler evenings can bring throws and outdoor textiles back into circulation.
Your storage should reflect your household rather than a generic idea of what belongs to each season.
Keep regularly used items within easy reach. Bulky pieces needed only occasionally can use higher shelves or less accessible spaces.
Avoid filling prime cupboard space with something you need twice a year.
Think Beyond the Linen Cupboard
Seasonal home essentials aren't always bedding.
Depending on where and how you live, the change in weather might mean bringing out additional throws, outdoor cushions, picnic items or other things associated with spending more time indoors or outdoors.
Before returning these items to circulation, review them.
Is everything still useful? Is anything damaged? Are you bringing something back simply because you always do?
Seasonal transitions are useful decision points because you are already handling these belongings.
Make Room for a Little Extra Space
Once everything is folded and organised, resist the temptation to fill every available gap.
A linen cupboard needs room to function.
You should be able to remove a set of bedding without the pile above collapsing. A blanket should slide out without three others coming with it. Putting freshly laundered bedding away should not require a game of cupboard Tetris.
The goal isn't perfectly folded shelves.
It is knowing what you have, keeping the right amount for your household and being able to find it when you need it.
Because when the temperature drops or an unexpected guest arrives, the last thing you want is to discover that the blanket you were looking for is somewhere at the back of that cupboard.
