The Five Second Rule

Think about your life from when you wake up in the morning:

  1. Getting up from your bed - how long does it take you to find your phone/glasses/medicine/cigarettes on or in your bedside cabinet?

  2. You get up to go to the bathroom: How long does it take you to find the toothpaste? How many toothpaste tubes do you have by your sink and toothbrushes? (by the way, why do you have more than 1?).

  3. Next, you move to the shower - can you find the right soap, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner quickly? Do the bottles topple over like dominoes whilst you try to find the right one?

  4. Once you have dried off, you move to the closet - you're going to work so need black trousers and a shirt. Can you see them immediately? Do other items fall on you when you open the doors? Has the shirt fallen to the back of the wardrobe?

How long does it take you every day to complete the above tasks in those two rooms? How often do you get frustrated and angry trying to look for the various items? Are you tense just thinking about the above scenarios? We haven't even reached your kitchen...If each of these four areas of your morning routine took minutes or even thirty seconds, you have spent too long on these tasks. Finding anything in your home should take you up to five seconds.

Yes that's right - five seconds

What if I told you, I can find everything I need in my home within five seconds. I know it's unbelievable but it is true.I use this rule with my clients as well so that once we have decluttered and organised the space, they should be able to find items within five seconds. If that doesn't happen (once they have become used to the new organised systems), then we go through the area again, declutter more or revisit the system. Usually, we find that if they still can't find an item, it is due to them having too much stuff in that space which is slowing the time to find the item. In the next few weeks, I will be reviewing areas within your home and providing my tips to declutter and organise the space to enable you to find your items in five seconds (and less).

Look forward to starting the first task with you!
